This article outlines the steps to resolve an unresponsive or "frozen" system state by performing a forced restart. This method should be used when the cursor, keyboard, and applications are completely unresponsive.
Note: This process may result in the loss of unsaved data in currently open applications.
Part 1: Attempting to Force Quit Applications
Before performing a hard reset, attempt to close the specific application causing the freeze.
Step 1: Open the Force Quit Menu
- Press Command + Option + Esc on your keyboard.
- If the Force Quit Applications window appears, select the unresponsive app.
- Find the application on the list and click Force Quit.
Note: If the Force Quit menu does not appear or the system remains unresponsive, proceed to Part 2.
Part 2: Performing a Force Restart
If the software methods fail, you must manually interrupt power to the device.
Step 1: Locate the Power Button
Identify the power button on your specific Mac model.
- MacBook Air/Pro: The power button is located at the top-right corner of the keyboard (often doubles as the Touch ID sensor).
Step 2: Execute the Force Shutdown
- Press and hold the Power Button (or Touch ID sensor).
- Keep holding the button down until the screen goes completely black.
Note: This process may take 10 to 30 seconds or longer. Do not release the button until the device powers off completely.
Step 3: Restart the Mac
- Wait approximately 10 seconds after the screen turns black to ensure the hardware has fully reset.
- Press the Power Button once normally to turn the Mac back on.
